Cyberfrag, game server hosting company. From our point of view...
Are you looking for a server to host your gaming? We were too, for quite some time we searched, not only were we looking for who offered the best price, but also latency had a bit to do with our choice. We have members in both the U.S. and Canada...
Anyway, our clan leader found Cyberfrag and signed up with them. And not soon after the problems began. Shortly after receiving a delivery confirmation that his money order had been delivered, he sent an e-mail asking about when the sever would be up. He got no response. He ended up sending three more e-mials and still got no response from Cyberfrag. He even spent time in their IRC, as did other clan members, asking about when our server would be up. We finally did receive a response from someone at Cyberfrags, but the response was, "we have not received payment yet, or maybe the payment arrived too late in the day and we have not processed it yet". The delivery confirmation clearly showed an AM delivery... This is when we started to wonder if we had made the right choice.
Eventually the server was up. Alright, let's over look how they ignored us, let's get in there, set it up the way we want it and enjoy. Well, not so fast there boys... About the second, maybe the third night that the server is up, we find a player in there with a name we had not seen before. This is no problem as we expected to find peeps in there that we had gamed with before. Then after the guy as been in there gaming with us for a while, all the time, he was ok in his attitude but he had quite the arrogant tone about him. Then he asks everyone if we want the map changed to something else. We're like, dood, you need admin to do that in our server... Turns out he had been set up as admin, he was a Cyberfrag representative and took it upon himself to set up his own admin in our server. With out so much as a respectful request, he just did it. When asked why he did this, he said, "I DONT NEED TO ASK!, I did it to test statsme." I am still trying to figure that one out, why does one need admin to test statsme, this works for anyone in the server, not just admin. Here's our thought on this: When you rent a house, the landlord can't just come in anytime they feel like it and take over, as long as you have paid your rent and are treating the home in a decent manner, they need to butt out!
Then, we wanted to install some anti-cheat software. We all know that the anti-cheat programs that are out there are not perfect, but they do catch many hackers and that's better than nothing if you ask us. But the same Cyberfrag representative who took it upon himself to join in our game one night, admin himself with out asking us and without using a name in the game that identifies himself as a Cyberfrag rep., told us that all of the anti cheat software is no good. "Trust me on this, I know!!" where the kind of comment he was making. After trying for some time get us convinced the the anti cheat software was useless in his view point, he finally came out with the truth. They would not let us install it, any of it. Here's our thought on that: When you rent a house, the landlord can't come in any time, tell you that how you eat is bad for you and his house, and then finally tell you that you are not allowed to eat that way in his home. These things need to be made clear in the first place, before you take the rent Mr. Lanlord...
After all the ignoring, all the BS, we all started to get pretty pissed off. And rightfully so... Rather than seeing that they could have handled this better and given us a refund, or maybe offered some free rent time, anything, they pretty much told us to like it or leave it. They did at one point offer to refund our money, but only to later say, oh, nevermind, you've had the sever for over 24 hours. Nice... Yet another business ethic failure on behalf of the clearly inexperienced minded venture that Cyberfrag is..
Thank you Cyberfrag for teaching us a lesson. We now are more prepared and know a lot more about what kinds of questions to ask before renting a server in the future. We know to notice if the "terms of service" link is dead on a server host company’s web site, that we should wait until they themselves know what the terms of service are instead of using us as a test rat to make them up as they go.
